4.6 x 6 Antique Bidjar Rug, Quatrefoil Design, Northwest Persia, Circa 1900

An antique Kurdish rug from the village of Bidjar in northwest Persia’s Kurdistan province. The red field is decorated with three Quatrefoil elements, stylized leaves and flowers and partial Quatrefoils along the edge of the field. The border is very distinctive, with coral color snowflake motifs flanked by what might be stylized leaves but have a zoomorphic aesthetic resembling crabs. These are rendered with the alternating color speckled effect sometimes seen in Bidjar rugs. To see this in detail, please scroll through the photos and view the border detail photo. I do not recall ever seeing this border format in an antique Bidjar rug.

The green leaves are a nice feature, as are the smaller camel color leaves and the deep green vines.
