3.10 X 4.11 Antique Shirvan Rug, Northeast Caucasus, Circa 1880

This charming antique Caucasian rug was probably woven in the Shirvan district, located to the west of the Caspian Sea in the northeast Caucasus. The navy blue field is decorated with stylized leaves and flowers, in some respects reminiscent of Chi Chi rugs that are woven further north in the Kuba district. The green Kufic style border is a beautiful feature of this rug, as are the striped interior guard border, yellow minor border and interior and exterior Reciprocal Trefoil  borders.

This rug has generalized wear and areas of restoration. It is best used in a low or moderate traffic area and would also be beautiful on a wall or on a table.
