4.10 x 6.2 Antique Fereghan Rug, Boteh Design, South Persia, Circa 1915

This is a difficult rug to attribute to a specific location of manufacture. Colleagues have suggested it is a Mahal from central Persia. Another colleague has suggested it is a Fereghan, from the same general area in central Persia (Sultanabad province). I initially was thinking it could be a finely woven tribal rug made by a member of the Afshar tribe in south Persia but, upon reflection, I think a Fereghan attribution makes more sense.

The navy field is decorated with a “Boteh” (Paisley shaped motifs) design.
