4.8 x 7.2 Antique Bidjar Rug, Split Arabesque Design, Northwest Persia, Circa 1900

This exceptionally beautiful antique Bidjar rug was woven in northwest Persia’s Kurdistan province, circa 1900. It appears to be based on the famous “Split Arabesque” format Bidjars, most of which were large, room size carpets, from a generation earlier.  The earlier examples tend to be more geometric and have a more archaic character. The rug here, while retaining the whimsical nature characteristic of Kurdish weaving from this region, is quite refined, with a beautifully drawn and well balanced design, intricate details and an extraordinary palette.

The navy blue field is decorated with Split Arabesque style strap work, sweeping vines, palmettes, larger flowers and ancillary flowers. The wide red border is decorated with light blue leaves and various palmettes and stylized flowers.

In outstanding condition, this antique Bidjar rug is suitable for a high traffic area and would go with a range of interior designs, from period 18th century styles to modern interiors.
