4.4 x 6.6 Antique Mohtasham Kashan Rug, Central Persia, Circa 1880

The first generation Mohtasham Kashan rug; i.e., circa 1880 to 1890, differ substantially from later examples woven in the first decade or so of the 20th century. The early examples, such as the rug here, tend to be quite finely woven but they are usually light in weight, with closely cropped pile and a pliable handle. The articulation of the designs, while “floral” in the broad sense of the term, tend to be more rectilinear than later examples which are usually more curvilinear. The early examples also tend to make great use of open space between the design elements.

This world class example a soft red Quatrefoil motif within the larger navy medallion. The ivory field is decorated with stylized floral forms, with a light camel color “abrash” (variegation of color) at the lower part of the field. The blue trim around the medallion is also beautifully variegated and both complex and elegant in terms of design. A navy blue major border with soft red guard borders frames the field.
