3’6″ x 4’5″ Antique Karaja Rug, Heriz Area, Northwest Persia, Circa 1925
Karaja is a village in the Heriz district in northwest Persia’s Azerbaijan province. This area is just south of the Caucasus region and the geographical proximity is often reflected in the character that certain rugs have. One might see a Persian design in an antique Caucasian rug or, in the case of this charming small Karaja rug, the geometric character which antique Caucasian rugs are famous for.
Three latch hook design medallions decorate the navy blue field which is framed by an ivory border.
This rug is technically a “village” rug and probably not attributable to a specific tribe and certainly not a nomadic weaving. We include it on the “Tribal Rugs” page as it has aesthetics similar to Kazak rugs from the Caucasus and what many people might consider a “tribal” rug type of appearance.
This antique Karaja rug is from our Quadrifoglio Rugs collection which features our entry level and mid price antique rugs and select contemporary hand woven rugs. Many of our new rugs utilize natural dyes and hand spun wool.
