3’3″ x 14’2″ Antique Karaja “Serapi” Runner, Heriz Area, Azerbaijan Province, Northwest Persia, Circa 1900

Antique Karaja rugs were woven in the Heriz area in northwest Persia’s Azerbaijan province. Examples with this style of weave, and featuring white, instead of blue, “wefts”, the horizontal foundation threads, are generally considered to be the earlier pieces and are often referred to colloquially as antique Karaja “Serapi” rugs.

This Karaja runner features a distinctive, earth tone palette, with green and camel medallions on a navy field that is framed by a camel color border.

High quality Karaja rugs, especially the older type like this, are prized for their geometric designs and color quality. They are suitable for both traditional interiors and modern interiors.
