9.5 x 12.7 Antique Karaja Carpet, Heriz Area, Northwest Persia, Circa 1915
Karaja is a village in the Heriz district in northwest Persia’s Azerbaijan province. It is known for being the only village in the region to use a single-knotted construction, with both contiguous halves of a knot on a flat plane rather than diagonally stacked, as is generally the case with most Heriz carpets using a double-knotted construction. This results in a generally lighter and more pliable textile.
Antique Karaja carpets, including the 19th century examples often colloquially referred to as antique “Serapi” carpets, can be among the most beautiful weavings from the Heriz area. They are often a bit more archaic than their counterparts from Heriz and tend to have beautiful coloration, a quality they share with many Heriz carpets.
The example features a navy blue and coral medallion on a brick red field that is framed by mid blue corner spandrels and a navy blue border with the “Turtle” design.
