4.9 x 6 Antique Heriz “Serapi” Rug, Circa 1900

A densely woven antique Heriz area rug of the age and caliber where examples are often referred to colloquially as antique “Serapi” rugs. The coral field is decorated with a large, navy blue medallion with a camel color center and trim. Camel and sky blue corner spandrels and a brick red ” Turtle” border frame the field.

This design is a renowned format sometimes associated with the Heriz district village of Bakshaish. The weave of this rug, however, is very dense, suggesting it was woven in Heriz itself rather than Bakshaish, where the weave tends to be less fine.

An outstanding example.
