4’5″ x 6’8″ Antique Mahal (Fereghan style) Rug, Central Persia, Circa 1925
This rug was woven in Sultanabad province in central Persia. If it were 30 years older and from the late 19th century, it would be classified as an antique “Fereghan” rug based on the design and coloration. It was more likely woven circa 1925, a period where rugs are typically no longer classified as “Fereghan” weavings. Rugs from this region woven in the 1920s or later tend to be less finely woven than their older related examples and are often called “Mahal” rugs rather than “Fereghan” or “Sultanabad”.
This rug is a bit enigmatic because the weave is somewhat finer than many Mahal weavings; the design is well rendered; and it contains the classic grass green highlights (visible in one of the detail photos) seen in related Fereghan rugs from an earlier period. Small size Mahal rugs are less common than room size Mahal carpets, further making this a distinctive piece.
In generally very good to excellent condition, there is one notable low area in the pile in the field, shown in a detail photo.
It is worth noting that there is another related style of rug referred to as a “Maghan Sarouk”. However, these have a heavier weave.
This is a classic, moderately priced furnishing rug that would comport well with earlier examples.
