11’9″ x 17’4″ Antique Heriz “Serapi” Carpet, Northwest Persia, Circa 1900

This over size antique Heriz “Serapi” carpet from northwest Persia has a beautiful palette, featuring an uncommon greenish camel color medallion with sky blue and coral highlights on a deep salmon color field. Sky blue pendants and stylized floral elements decorate the field which is framed by ivory corner spandrels with green insets and a navy blue border.

Early antique carpets from the Heriz district; i.e., those woven between circa 1870 and 1900, are often colloquially referred to as antique “Serapi” carpets. No village of this name exists but the term is used, and sometimes misused, to refer to examples older than the most mass produced examples from the 1920s and later. Antique carpets from the Heriz satellite villages of Karaja and Bakshaish are also sometimes referred to as antique “Serapi” carpets. This particular carpet was probably woven in Heriz itself, as it features a denser construction and different knotting technique to Karaja carpets and does not have the aesthetic characteristics generally seen in Bakshaish carpets.
