2.3 x 2.9 Antique Bidjar Mat, Northwest Persia, Circa 1915
You might not find Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Chris Hillman or any of the other Byrds in the design of this antique Bidjar rug, but you will find 24 other colorful birds, remarkable artistry on the part of the weaver in a rug of this small size.
Antique Persian rugs of this size (about 2 feet by 3 feet) are called “mats” or “poshtis”. This is one of the most beautiful, and certainly most charming and fascinating, antique Bidjar mats we have ever had. What makes it most distinctive is that the weaver managed to incorporate 24 birds, in such a wide ranging palette, into a piece of textile art slightly larger than 6 square feet.
This Bidjar features a stunning sky blue medallion on a navy blue open field. Coral and sky blue corner spandrels and a brick red border frame the field. It features all natural dyes, including aubergine, sky blue, yellow, grass green, bottle green, burnt sienna, denim blue, navy blue, brick red, ivory and a light grey that might be natural undyed wool.
Finely woven, on a cotton foundation, this antique Bidjar mat is highly collectible. In excellent condition, it is suitable for use on the floor, a table or displayed on a wall.
