Approximately 12 x 18 Antique Bidjar Carpet, Harshang Design, Northwest Persia, Circa 1880
19th century Persian Bidjar carpets are renowned for their color quality and this carpet illustrates why. A large coral medallion floats on a navy blue field which is framed by brick red corner spandrels. The classic Harshang design decorates all three sections. The denim blue, palmette style and the ivory minor borders indicate this carpet should be included in the broader group referred to as “Garus” or “Gerus” Bidjars. The most frequently seen design in this group is the Split Arabesque format, but other designs were also utilized. These are among the most beautiful and important of all Bidjar carpets produced in northwest Persia’s Kurdistan province in the 19th century, most post circa 1870.
