3.8 x 16.6 Antique Northwest Persian Runner, Probably Bakshaish, Dated Circa 1921

This stunning antique runner was woven in northwest Persia, possibly in the village of Bakshaish in the Heriz district. It has multi-color wool warps and a leaf and flowerhead border that suggest a possible Bakshaish attribution. It is well woven and in exceptional condition. There is a small panel in the upper right corner containing a date that would seem to read “1338”, which translates to circa 1921. Without a date, I would think the rug is earlier than that and dates are frequently incorrect. That said, it still puts this exceptional runner at older than 100 years, highlighting the remarkable condition.

The brick red field is decorated with a series of latch-hook medallions in shades of camel and mahogany with green, coral and light blue trim. “Abrashed” (variegated)  green triangles, probably representing half of a diamond shape medallion, frame the brick red field. An ivory leaf and flowerhead border with mid blue guard borders also frames the field.
