5.1 x 8.4 Antique Northwest Persian Rug, Possibly Kurdish, Circa 1890

A highly distinctive antique northwest Persian tribal rug, possibly woven by a Kurdish weaver. The field is decorated with alternating bands of color with navy blue and brown backgrounds, respectively. Each band is decorated with stylized animals or flowers or abstract geometric motifs. A brick red and pale yellow Reciprocal Trefoil border frames the field. The major border features alternating diagonal stripes in shades of green, yellow, ivory, navy blue, brick and aubergine. A mid blue outer border is decorated with stylized flowerheads.

This rug is of fairly large size for what is probably a nomadic weaving.

The brown is oxidized. There are areas of restoration, especially at one end where the blue in the guard border has been repiled.

This is a very collectable rug that also has great decorative character. It could be used on a wall or the floor and would enhance interiors ranging from traditional to modern.
