8.11 x 11.11 Antique Fereghan Sarouk Carpet, Central Persia, Circa 1890
This beautifully drawn and colored antique Fereghan Sarouk carpet was woven in the central Persian province of Sultanabad in the late 19th century. The deep salmon color field colors and well articulated navy medallion with a coral Quatrefoil motif at the center. The field is decorated with various floral forms in the somewhat rectilinear form that suggests this carpet is a 19th century example. As is the case with other types of Persian carpets, they tended to become busier and more curvilinear by the early part of the 20th century.
Ivory corner spandrels and a navy blue border with the classic oxidized grass green frame the field.
