4’6″ x 7′ Antique Bidjar Rug, Quatrefoil Design, Northwest Persia, Circa 1890

A wool foundation antique Bidjar rug woven in northwest Persia’s Kurdistan province circa 1890. The salmon-red field contains three Quatrefoil elements and light blue stylized leaves with coral, camel navy blue and green ancillary floral elements. A brick red border of an early style frames the field. A classic and distinctive feature in some Bidjar rugs, and seen in this rug, is the speckled or checkerboard effect seen in some motifs, where the weaver has alternated colors. A charming example of Kurdish weaving.
