7.5 x 11.10 Antique Bidjar Carpet, Calyx design, Northwest Persia, Circa 1900

This format, referred to as the Calyx design, is one of the most rare designs seen in antique Bidjar carpets.

In this example, yellow and light blue flowers alternate with smaller, coral and navy flowers on a red field. The navy blue border is particularly beautiful, with palmettes and scrolling vines with flowers. This carpet includes the distinctive Bidjar feature of having some of the flowers with a “speckled” appearance, where the weaver has alternated colors in certain motifs, in this case in some of the ancillary flowers i the field.
