4’8″ x 7’3″ Antique Bidjar Rug, Herati Design, Northwest Persia, Circa 1920

An antique Bidjar woven in northwest Persia’s Kurdistan provine. The Kurdish weavers in the 19th and early 20th centuries displayed a remarkable sense of color. The rug features the classical “Herati” design on a red field that contains a navy medallion. Highlights in a wide ranging palette including coral , light blue, green, pale yellow and ivory are seen in various areas of the rug. A navy blue border with the “Turtle” design frames the field.

This rug is in good general condition with areas where the pile is thinner. It has been expertly cleaned and would benefit from minor repair. An example from our Quadrifoglio Rugs Collection of entry and mid price antique rugs and select new rugs, this moderately priced antique Bidjar rug is a colorful rug with a classic format.

People often think only of “nomadic” rugs as being “tribal” rugs. However, many rugs attributable to various tribal groups living in different areas of Persia were woven by members of tribal groups such as Kurdish, Afshar or Bakhtiari people living sedentary lifestyles in villages. We include many village rugs attributable to such tribal groups on our “Tribal Rugs” page, since considering only nomadic examples to be “tribal” rugs is an artificial distinction.
