4.10 x 7.2 Antique Mohtasham Kashan Rug, Central Persia, Circa 1900
ntique rugs from the central Persian city of Kashan are often referred to colloquially as “Mohtasham” Kashan rugs, after the renowned family workshop that operated from around 1880 until the early 20th century. Few Mohtasham rugs are signed and the term is broadly used for Kashan rugs of a certain age and quality. This example is finely woven and has fairly thick pile, for the type, suggesting it dates to circa 1900 rather than the 1880s first generation Mohtashams.
The directional floral design has almost a Millefleur character and features a wide ranging palette. We acquired this rug directly from an exceptional New York family collection.
The condition is excellent and it is suitable for use on the floor or display on a wall.
