3.5 X 8.4 Antique Surahani Rug, Eastern Caucasus, Circa 1890

Antique Caucasian rugs of the type referred to as Surahani are somewhat uncommon. They were woven in the eastern Caucasus and combine elements and aspects that are reminiscent of both Shirvan and Kuba rugs from the northeast Caucasus. This example featured a mellow palette that still reflects a wide range of colors. The navy blue field is decorated with a series of medallions and framed by a light greenish-khaki color Leaf and Chalice border.

The random, free flowing placement of motifs suggests it is a 19th century example.

Acquired directly from a superlative Massachusetts family collection.
