4’6″ x 7′ Antique “Halvai” Bidjar Rug, Kurdistan Province, Northwest Persia, Circa 1900
A real conversation piece, this finely woven “Halvai” Bidjar rug from Kurdistan province in northwest Persia features what appear to be stylized elephants and possibly stylized floral forms on an ivory field. The row of deep green elephants at the bottom of the rug is perhaps the clearest view of this interpretation of what is an unusually abstract design for such a finely woven rug.
The relative precision of the navy blue major border, with the floral element well resolved in each corner, along with the fine weave, suggests that the weaver was probably capable of a more realistic rendering of the field motifs but chose to render the design in a more abstract form. There are also small, stylized animals, further adding to the “tribal” character of the rug.
