3’6″ x 3′  Exceptional Large Antique Jaff Kurdish Bag Face, Northwest Persia, Circa 1890

An exceptional and quite large antique Jaff Kurdish bag face with a large scale version of the classic diamond design with latch hook motifs. As is the case with many of the most artistic Jaff Kurdish bags, the color range and quality of this piece is exceptional. shades include light blue, navy blue, tangerine, madder red, ivory, a brownish aubergine, celadon green, mid green, brown and peach. The large scale design of this piece separates it from the majority of Jaff Kurdish bag faces with the diamond format, which more typically have smaller scale motifs.

This outstanding example also retains the red end panel and much of the brocade end finish at one end and the two color chain stitch at the other end. The general condition is excellent and the wool is of high quality with beautifully saturated colors. The ends would benefit from being neatened up some.

This piece would be great displayed on a wall or table and is also suitable for light traffic if used on the floor.

We have seen few Jaff bag faces of this caliber over the course of our 40 years in the antique rug field and consider this to be a world class example.

Helen and Douglas Stock were early advocates of Persian Kurdish weavings, featuring antique Bidjar rugs in magazine ads as far back as the late 1980s.
