9’x 12’3″ An Exceptional “Calyx” Design Antique Bidjar Carpet, Kurdistan Province, Northwest Persia, Circa 1900

The “Calyx” design is among the least common and most beautiful formats seen in antique Bidjar carpets. Both color and scale are very important in Calyx design examples, as the size of the motifs relative to the general size of the carpet can make a substantial difference. In this example, the scale is very well rendered, with the motifs large enough to be bold but having adequate open space to avoid being busy.

The multiple border format frames the field well, with ivory guard stripes supplementing the light blue guard borders that frame the red “Turtle” palmette design major border.

Very good to excellent general condition with minor low areas in pile.
