3’10” X 5’11” Antique Shirvan Rug, Northeast Caucasus, Circa 1900

An antique northeast Caucasian Shirvan rug with large flowerheads and vinery in a lattice sort of design on a navy blue field. The field is framed by a brick red Kufic border with ivory guard borders and a light blue outer border. Shades of soft yellow, ivory, green, mid blue and sky blue complement the navy field and brick red border.

The brick red flowerheads in the field are more geometric than the ivory flowerheads and are somewhat reminiscent of heavily stylized “snowflake” style motifs seen in antique Karagashli rugs which are woven further north in the Kuba district in the northeast Caucasus.
