3.8 x 9 Antique Tribal Rug, Probably North Persia, Possibly Luri Tribe, Circa 1900
A somewhat puzzling rug, this tribal piece has features that suggest it was woven by the Luri tribe. In particular, the diagonal stripe design decorating the interior and exterior guard borders and the Boteh (Paisley shape motifs) are often seen in Luri weavings. The Luri were active weavers in both south Persia and in the Veramin area in northern Persia.
The field is decorated with a series of alternating brick red and navy blue panels plus four ivory medallions containing Boteh. An ivory major border frames the field.
A moderately priced example with good color and character that is an option for a beginning collector of antique rugs and/or for decorative use.
