8.9 x 12 Antique Fereghan Sarouk Carpet, Central Persia, Sultanabad Province, Circa 1890

Fereghan Sarouk carpets were woven in the central Persian province of Sultanabad. Though some rugs and carpets of the traditional Fereghan type seem to date as early as the early 19th century, the heavier weave Fereghan Sarouk type rugs and carpets generally were woven between circa 1870 and 1910.

Cypress Trees were widely favored as a motif and an entire group of Fereghan Sarouk carpets with a central medallion and a field decorated with four Cypress Trees exists. Whether these were all produced by one specific workshop is difficult to say.

This example has excellent scale of the motifs; interesting details such as the small, striped leaves; and beautiful color.
