3’2″ x 4’6″ Antique Northwest Persian Rug, Dated Circa 1903

This charming small rug was probably woven in northwest Persia and might be a Kurdish weaving, though it was possibly woven further north in the Caucasus. It has a date which appears to read “1320” which translates to approximately 1903.

The “abrashed” (variegated) brick red “open field” is decorated with two navy blue medallions with Anchor pendants. The medallions are decorated with stylized flowers. A navy blue border with stylized leaves or flowers frames the field.

The construction of this rug is interesting. It is not as pliable as many Kurdish rugs from northwest Persia or even south Caucasian rugs and it has red wool wefts (horizontal foundation threads).
