3’7″ x 5’8″ Antique Kazak Rug, Southwest Caucasus, Circa 1895

A charming antique Kazak rug from the southwest Caucasus. Although this rug does not fit neatly into a certain sub-group of Kazak rugs, with the brick red field being decorated with three latch hook medallions, the small, square medallions are similar to what is sometimes seen in Karachoph type Kazak rugs. This rug also has a border suggestive of the “Bordjalou” group. The Reciprocal Trefoil interior guard border is a very nice feature, as is the “Wave” outer border, similar to the “Running Dog” borders seen in some east Caucasian rugs.

The variegated shades give the rug additional character.
