Of uncommon size, this antique Karaja rug was woven in the Heriz district in northwest Persia. The terra cotta color field is decorated with seven medallions in shades of denim blue, coral and ivory. Stylized floral elements decorate the field. A navy blue border with flowerheads frames the field.

A finely woven antique Persian Heriz rug of the age and caliber where Heriz rugs are often referred to colloquially as antique "Serapi" rugs. Heriz area rugs with a medallion of this style are often attributed to the village of Bakshaish, however, the dense weave and articulation of the motifs suggest this rug was woven in Heriz itself. The brick red field is decorated with a navy blue medallion with coral and camel highlights and framed by a sky blue banding. A navy blue Turtle border frames the field. Northwest Persia, circa 1900.
