3.7 x 11.9 Antique Heriz “Serapi” Runner Rug, Northwest Persia, Azerbaijan Province, Circa 1900

The displaying the excellent use of open space that characterizes many antique Heriz district rugs of the age and type where they are often colloquially referred to as antique “Serapi” rugs, this runner features a series of red and brown medallions on a navy blue field. What appear to be whimsical, stylized flowers decorate the medallions which are complemented by stylized leaves and small, squarish ancillary medallions. An ivory major border and red guard borders frame the field.

This runner is densely woven, with a construction often referred to as having “alternate depressed warps”; that is, the warp threads can be seen on two levels, with the lower level offset between the adjacent two.

Antique Heriz “Serapi” rugs of this age and caliber are comparatively uncommon and go well in both traditional and modern interiors.
