8.3 x 12.2 Antique Heriz “Serapi” Carpet, Northwest Persia, Circa 1900
This antique Heriz carpet features a rare and prized denim blue field with an all-over design of leaves, flowerheads and palmettes. It has what is referred to as “alternate depressed warps”, with individual knots being stacked but off-set rather than one half of the knot directly over the other half. It is of the age and type where we would apply the colloquial term “Serapi” but it is not one of the more finely woven examples. That said, the criteria that makes this an outstanding example is the color and geometry, with an excellent mix of larger and smaller motifs.
