4′ x 4’11” Antique Chi Chi Rug, Northeast Caucasus, circa 1900
Antique Chi Chi rugs were woven in the Kuba district, and some examples seemingly a bit further in the Shirvan district, in the northeast Caucasus. They are among the most collectable types of northeast Caucasian rugs, easily identifiable by their distinctive border style.
This example, from our moderate price range for antique rugs, features an all-over design of stylized geometric motifs that is framed by brown border in the classic Chi Chi style and complemented by geometric guard borders.
This rug has thin pile and shows considerable wear, which has become more acceptable and often fashionable in recent years. It is priced accordingly and would be considerably more expensive if it were closer to full pile condition.
