9.1 x 14 Antique Bakshaish Carpet, Heriz District, Northwest Persia, Circa 1890
Bakshaish is a village in the Heriz district in northwest Persia that produced carpets, largely in the last quarter of the 19th century. Carpets attributed to Bakshaish, as opposed to Heriz itself, tend to be more archaic. They often features all-over design as opposed to carpets with a central medallion format.
This carpet, which some might attribute to Heriz and would often be referred to colloquially as an antique “Serapi” carpet, was possibly woven in Bakshaish. The pinwheel style medallion is the primary design element suggesting a Bakshaish origin; and the archaic articulation of the “Turtle” border is another.
Ivory field carpets from this region are prized and the spacious placement of the stylized floral motifs in the field is a strong feature.
