8’4″ x 11’10” Antique Bakshaish Carpet, Heriz District, Northwest Persia, Circa 1885
A 19th century Bakshaish carpet from the Heriz district in northwest Persia. The abrashed brownish-navy blue field contains a pale yellow medallion and motifs that I have no idea what they are intended to be. Rocketships? The navy field is surrounded by a larger, terra cotta color field with stylized flowers and leaves. Variegated (“abrashed”) light blue corner spandrels and a navy blue border of classic design, and with pale yellow guard borders, frame the field.
This carpets reflects the archaic style often seen in early Bakshaish carpets.
