3.7 x 10.7 Antique Bakhtiari Runner Rug, South Persia, Circa 1920
The Bakhtiari tribal group occupied south Persia. Some members were nomadic, while others lived a more sedentary life settled into villages.
The Bakhtiari people wove textiles in a variety of types and sizes, from flat woven and pile bags, to small rugs of largely geometric designs, to extremely fine signed carpets produced for Bakhtiari leaders, sometimes referred to as Khans. The Bakhtiari Khan carpets can be among the most finely woven and refined carpets produced by any Persian tribe in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
This small runner is probably a village rug, rather than nomadic piece. It reflect the tendency of Bakhtiari weavers to use compartments in their designs, in this case the ivory medallions, as well as an emphasis on Cypress trees.
Somewhat similar to Kurdish weavers, Bakhtiari weavers tended to use a wide range of saturated colors.
This moderately priced example would serve well in a variety of applications, including in a hallway or at the end of a living room, perpendicular to a larger carpet.
