5’11” x 7’11” Antique Afshar Tribal Rug, Probably South Persia, Circa 1910
This antique Afshar tribal rug is an outstanding example and also enigmatic. It is quite a rare size at just under 6 feet size and 8 feet long. It is also densely woven, with depressed double knots, where one warp thread that half of the knot goes around is almost directly over the warp thread where the second half of the knot wraps around. The weave is almost suggestive of Bidjar rugs in this stacked knot construction, though it does not really look like a Bidjar weave. The rug has wool warps and brownish-red wool wefts.
The field is somewhere between a denim blue and a navy blue and difficult to capture in photos. A beautiful range of ancillary colors are seen throughout the uncommon all-over stylized floral design.
Helen had the great insight that a group of Afshar people did live in the Bidjar area in northwest Persia’s Kurdistan province. So, while this is probably a south Persian rug, the uncommon size, rare design and the dense structure make one at least wonder if it could have been woven in northwest Persia.
There is a famous group of antique Afshar rugs that are referred to as “Tulip” Afshars. The generally feature large tulips on a navy blue field. This rug appears to have tulips in the border.
A very collectable antique tribal rug that is, in our experience, one of a kind. That superb condition and strong structure make it suitable, with proper care, for a high traffic area.
