7’9″ x 10’10” Antique Bidjar Carpet With Herati Design Field and Deerhead Border, Northwest Persia, Circa 1895
This antique Bidjar carpet has at least three distinctive features. First, the weave has a tapestry-like quality to it. Some Bidjar rugs have a higher knot count but often have a more rigid handle. We have seen other antique Bidjar rugs and/or carpets with a weave that this carpet reminds us of, which suggests the possibility that a specific workshop featured this style of construction, which tends to be fairly fine and dense yet pliable and with high quality wool.
The carpet features the classical “Herati” design on a navy blue field; and the coral medallion is also decorated with the “Herati” design. Typically, carpets with a central medallion also have corner spandrels. In this case, the Herati design runs through both the medallion and field and extends out to the interior minor board with no corner spandrels. The additional aspect that stands out is that the field is surrounded by the famous deer head major border with magnificent color quality. Some motifs feature the checkerboard-like speckling sometimes seen in Bidjar rugs and carpets.
