7.7 x 11.2 Antique Bidjar Carpet, Harshang Design, Northwest Persia, Circa 1880
The Harshang design, featuring various palmettes and flowerheads, is one of the most beautiful formats featured in antique Bidjar carpets from the 19th century and, subjectively, both Helen and my favorite pattern. This early example, dating to circa 1880 and of very fine quality, features a beautifully colored and well articulated version of the Harshang design, with palmettes and flowers in shades of light green and deep green, madder red, ivory, sky blue, yellow, aubergine, light brown and coral. Navy field Bidjar carpets are less common than their red field counterparts and the palette is this Bidjar is outstanding.
A complex border system frames the field.
