4.9 x 6.2 Antique Karaja Rug, Heriz Area, Northwest Persia, Circa 1920
This antique Karaja rug from the Heriz district in northwest Persia’s Azerbaijan province is distinctive in several ways. Unlike most small Karaja rugs, which have a triple medallion format, this rug features a single, eight point medallion on a terra cotta color field. Generally, with medallion rugs, there are also corner spandrels, in this case an abrashed (variegated) sky blue. The abundant use of deep green, as an ancillary color in the spandrels and in other areas of the rug, is another distinctive feature. In addition, the navy blue major border is not done in the more typical Turtle palette style, instead having flower heads and palmettes alternating between a pair of leaves.
