A fine antique Mohtashem Kashan rug with an eight point navy blue medallion on a salmon color field. This outstanding example features a wide range of colors that are beautifully saturated. The major border is particularly well done, with great detail that is, at once, both precise and whimsical.

Mohtashem Kashan rugs are often considered to be the pinnacle of Persian rug production in the last quarter of the 19th century. They are prized not only for their technical quality but also for the charming manner in which the design is often rendered. As production of rugs continued in the central Persian city of Kashan into the 20th century, the designs tended to become busier and more mechanical, making antique Kashan rugs of this earlier vintage prized by connoisseurs.
