4.6 x 6.7 Antique Fereghan Sarouk Rug, Central Persia, Circa 1880
An important antique Fereghan Sarouk rug from central Persia’s Sultanabad province. The ivory field is decorated with palmettes, leaves and flowers within a brick red lattice style format. The navy blue border design, with leaves and polychromatic flowers on a diagonal, is perhaps the quintessential border format for Fereghan Sarouk rugs.
While this rug is very finely woven, it retains a whimsical aesthetic and more geometric articulation of some of the motifs that suggest it is from the earlier period of Fereghan Sarouk production, probably circa 1880.
