4’4″ x 6′ Antique Bidjar Rug, Herati Design, Northwest Persia, Kurdistan Province, Circa 1920

This antique Bidjar rug features the classical “Herati” design on an uncommon camel color field. The field contains an elaborate medallion with a coral color center on a navy background with leaves and flowers. Navy corner spandrels and a red “Turtle” design border with ivory guard borders frames the field.

The end guard borders of this rug have been rewoven. The general condition is very good.

The vast majority of antique rugs woven in Bidjar and Senneh in northwest Persia’s Kurdistan province were woven by Kurdish weavers. People often think only of “nomadic” rugs as being “tribal” rugs. In fact, many antique Persian rugs woven by members of various tribal groups, including Kurdish, Afshar and Bakhtiari people, were made in villages by people living a sedentary lifestyle. Given that, we include many village rugs on our “Tribal Rugs” page as they are, in fact, textile art produced by members of tribal groups and to limit that attribution only to nomadic people is an artificial distinction.
