4.3 x 9.8 Antique “Chajli” Shirvan Rug, Northeast Caucasus, Circa 1890

Rugs with this basic format, with large, octagon shaped medallions are woven in both the Kazak area of the southwest Caucasus, where the weave is coarser and the pile is thicker, and in the Shirvan district in the northeast Caucasus, where they tend to be more finely woven and to have thinner pile. This example is of the Shirvan type and it has a wide range of colors on a navy blue field.

Although there are many criteria that help contribute to the dating of Caucasian rugs, one aspect is the random placement of motifs. This can be seen in various areas of the field, where designs that appear on the right half of the rug are not mirrored on the left half. Often, in later examples, the designs are more mechanical.

Rugs of this wide and short runner format are often referred to as “long rugs” rather than more conventional runners.
