4’11” x 8’5″ Antique Bidjar Rug, Open Field Design, Northwest Persia, Kurdistan Province, Circa 1875
We have a long history with this antique Bidjar rug. Perhaps twenty to thirty years ago, we worked with a lovely couple in helping them build a very substantial collection of antique Oriental rugs. These were displayed in four homes, ranging from New England to Florida, and this antique Bidjar rug was part of the furnishings of their residence across from Boston’s Public Garden. Although we miss our friends, we are proud to be able to offer this rug for sale once again.
Weavers in the Bidjar village area, located in Kurdistan province in northwest Persia, produced mostly pile rugs and room size carpets, but also produced some flat woven “kilim” rugs. This pile rug features a design associated with kilim weavings, with an asymmetrical, navy blue medallion with green and blue pendants floating on an abrashed (variegated) red, open field. Navy corner spandrels and an oxidized brown border of early format, with scrolling leaves and flowers, frame the field.
We consider this to be a real “art rug”, with powerful graphics and excellent color. Antique Bidjar rugs, and the best antique Persian Kurdish rugs in general, are renowned for their color quality. The variegated navy blue medallion floats on the soft red field. A great array of colors is seen in the medallion; in the green, ivory and blue pendants; in the navy blue corner spandrels; and in the border.
Known colloquially as “The Iron Rug Of Persia”, Bidjar rugs feature a dense weave which tends to make them durable. One can get another glimpse of the wide ranging palette in the detail photo (visible if you scroll through the featured photos) showing the weave of the rug, with deep green, ivory, coral, aubergine, yellow, madder red and mid blue highlights.
