3.8 x 5.2 Antique Bidjar Rug, Northwest Persia, Circa 1915

Both the color and the articulation of the design in this early 20th century Persian Bidjar rug are outstanding. A complex medallion decorates the deep sky blue field which is framed by navy corner spandrels and a red border. Kurdish weavers often had a remarkable color sense and the use of such a wide and varied palette is not an easy thing to succeed at. In this case, the various greens, coral, navy, sky blue and madder red work beautifully together to produce an cheerful and graphically powerful example of textile art.
