3’6″ x 3’3″ Antique Mahajaran Sarouk Rug of Uncommon Size, Central Persia, Circa 1925
Mahajaran Sarouk rugs were the type of Sarouk rugs that followed the “Fereghan” period of the late 19th century until about 1910. Mahajaran Sarouks were then made from about 1910 to 1925. They are generally better quality and far more beautiful than the more “commercial” Sarouks that were made in the 1920s and 1930s.
Square examples are only occasionally seen and are typically a bit larger than this piece. Although Mahajaran Sarouks were made with both navy fields and red fields, the navy field examples are generally more prized.
This piece reflects the excellent use of empty space that characterizes many Mahajaran Sarouk rugs. The stylized floral forms float on the “abrashed” (variegated) navy field which is framed by a light rose color border with pale yellow guard borders.
A beautiful and moderately priced antique rug, antique Mahajran Sarouk rugs tend to be very durable and, with proper care, can often be used even in high traffic areas.
