3.6 x 10.4 Antique Karaja Runner Rug, Heriz District, Northwest Persia, Circa 1920

A classic antique Karaja rug with a series of five medallions on a navy blue field. Karaja rugs were woven in the Heriz district in northwest. They often have an appearance very similar to rugs woven in Heriz itself. However, Karaja rugs have a different weave technique, being “Single knotted” where all of the vertical foundation threads, called “warp” threads, are on a flat plane rather than stacked, as they are in Heri weavings. This tends to give Karaja rugs a lighter handle. Navy blue field Karaja rugs are less common than their red or salmon field counterparts and, due to their geometry, are well suited for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
