12.3 x 18.6 Antique Karaja Serapi Carpet, Heriz District, Northwest Persia, Circa 1890

An antique carpet from the Heriz district in northwest Persia’s Azerbaijan province of the type often colloquially referred to as antique “Serapi” carpets. This carpet was possibly woven in the village of Karaja. It features a navy blue medallion decorated with stylized leaves and framed by green trim on a paprika color field. The field is decorated with stylized floral forms in shades of denim blue, green, peach, sky blue and ivory. Ivory corner spandrels and a navy blue “Turtle” design border with green guard borders frame the field.
