Antique Sewan Kazak, Southwest Caucasian, Circa 1890
Antique Kazak rugs were woven in the southwest Caucasus. There are a number of important sub-groups within the general category, including Karachoph, Bordjalou, Fachralo, Lori-Pambak and Sewan. This is an example of the Sewan type, which tend to feature the distinctive “shield” medallion. This piece reflects powerful motifs that combine to form a cohesive whole. The green medallion has ivory trim and floats on a red field. Ivory “Reciprocal Trefoil” guard borders and a mid blue major border with leaves and abstract flowers frame the field. And stylized animals appear in both the medallion and the field.
